Last weekend we have held at Bern an international conference about
the Pantheon in Rome.

Amongst others there was a particularly important contribution by
Lise Hetland about the dating of the Pantheon and the obviously wrong
dating of some brickstamps by Herbert Bloch. This may also have
consequences for the Ostian chronology. Lise Hetland has just
finished her PhD on Hadrianic Architecture (stimulated and co-
supervised by Janet DeLaine) and analyzed very carefully the
brickstamps of the Pantheon. There are about 90 stamps in situ. 23 of
which are definitely Trajanic, only one - which has been found in the

upper parts of the Pantheon - is clearly Hadrianic. All the others
have been dated by Bloch Hadrianic, just because they were found at
the Pantheon; and it seemed for sure that the Pantheon was built by
Hadrian. The careful revision by Hetland could convincingly proof
that the Pantheon in reality must have been initiated under Trajan
shortly after the destruction of the earlier Pantheon 110 AD and was
already completed in large parts when Hadrian took over the building
site. Probably only the cupola and the front portico have been built
under his reign. The new dating was so convincing that it was
uniformly accepted by the participants of the conference. The fatal
thing seems to be, that the 50-60 brickstamps, which Bloch assumed to
be Hadrianic but probably are (at least in part) Trajanic, have been
also used for the dating of Ostian buildings. Therefore we should be
careful in future when dealing with buildings of that period. It
might be that some assumed Hadrianic buildings are actually earlier.

Ostia. Di conseguenza dovremmo fare attenzione in futuro in cui riguardo
alle costruzioni di quel periodo. Potrebbe essere che alcuni edifici
presupposti di età Adrianea siano realmente più antichi.
